Prized for their beauty and rarity, a burl is a growth on a tree—a deformation if you will—that produces intriguing wood grain patterns.
The Rolex Day-Date 18038 features a stunning burl wood dial in fantastic original condition. The reference 18038 was the first reference of the fourth generation Day-Dates to be issued, and as such it had the honor of debuting an all-new caliber. Before delving into current happenings, I wanted to recap some of my favourite wood-dial watches from the past. As is often the case with collectible vintage watches, Rolex is king here, with a multitude of dial options across three main model lines. Rolex also made a fair amount of wood dials for its Cellini line. The hexagonal tonneau-shaped ref. 4122 with mahogany dial measures around 28mm x 30 to 35mm, depending on the model, and looks like something a cigar-smoking, backgammon-playing aristocrat would wear to the Groucho Club in London.
